If I were to write a farewell letter,
It would begin with a greeting,
Hold a few of our shared stories,
And end with a wish for your happiness.

Though short in content,
It would become a long letter,
Steeped in a long solitude.

Your memory
Has given me strength on difficult days,
But I know—

That memory,
So long and distant,

Is still, even now,
A sigh whose end I cannot yet see.

 

 

 

보내지 못한 편지들과
보낼 곳을 모르는 편지들과
받았는지 모를 편지들을 위해

내가 이별의 편지를 쓴다면
첫 인사말과,
몇몇 우리의 이야기,
그리고 행복을 빌며 맺는 마지막 인사말이 담기겠지요.

 

짧은 내용이지만
긴 글이 될 것이고
그 속엔 오랜 외로움이 스며 있겠지요.

 

당신의 추억은
어려운 날들에 힘이 되어 주지만
나는 알고 있어요.

 

그 기억이
얼마나 오래고 먼지,

 

그래서 나는 아직도 그 끝을 보지 못한,
긴 한숨이라는 것을.
